Outlook E-mail Security Update

M?crosöft has just released a significant security enhancement for Outlook, the Outlook 2000 E-mail Security Update and the Outlook 98 E-mail Security Update.  The update was designed to help protect you against most viruses spread via Outlook e-mail attachments or Worm viruses that exploit Outlook's extensibility to replicate through the Outlook Address Book, such as the ILOVEYOU/ Melissa viruses. This update limits certain functionality in Outlook in order to provide a higher level of security.  You may have seen numerous news reports about this update, and ITG wanted to ensure you fully understood the update's functionality and its impact on certain M?crosöft Line of Business (LOB) applications before installing the update.

Please read before you install:

·          Siebel and Clarify application users should not install at this time and should wait for a follow up communication.  Other LOB applications may be impacted if the update is installed.

·          There is no remove/uninstall utility for this update. To remove it, you must remove and then reinstall Office 2000 SR1a.

·          This security update is for US English versions of Office 2000 SR-1a only and all versions of Outlook 98. Localized versions will be available soon.

 

ITG's Recommended Action:

·          Installation of this update is not mandatory at this time.  ITG Information Security recommends this update to help protect you from viruses, but there may be LOB applications that will be impacted if the update is installed.  If in doubt, do not install this update and wait for follow-up communications from your IT Account Manager and/or Business Unit IT (BUIT) contacts regarding your LOB application test status with this update before installing.

Minimum System Requirements

·          Office 2000 Service Release 1a US English version only.

·          Supported Operating Systems include Window 95, Windows 98, NT 4.0 or Windows 2000.

·          Pentium with 90 MHz processor, 32 MB RAM and 400 MB free hard disk space is recommended. Actual disk space used will depend on options selected.

·          Install Office 2000 SR1a from: http://itgweb/office2000. The Outlook E-mail Security Update requires Office 2000 SR1a.

·          Install the Outlook E-mail Security Update from: http://officeupdate.M?crosöft.com/2000/downloaddetails/Out2ksec.htm.
